Why All This Pain?

I have never liked pain. But then who does?  I have quite a low threshold for pain, and I remember the first time I heard that people with leprosy could feel no pain; I wished I could be like them.  However, thinking about it further, I realized that the ability to feel pain is a blessing.

Imagine having a mild electric shock and not removing your hand because you can’t feel the effects of the shock?  What would happen then?  Imagine stepping on some dying embers without feeling the pain of a burn.  Your feet would be badly burned before you even notice anything.  I could go on, but I’m sure you get the point.  The lesser pain saves you from the greater pain!

As much as we hate it, pain is a blessing!  In fact, Psalm 119:71 says, It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn your statutes!  Admit it, the tests and trials you have faced on this earth have actually brought you closer to God, haven’t they?

There are no easy answers here.  I don’t know what you have gone through or may still be going through today, but I know what the Word of God says: “God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.” James 1:12 (NLT): “Stay strong, my friend!  Trust only in Him!  Do not rely on your own wisdom.  He will come through for you.”   Amen.
