We are now closer to Christmas in November, but let me talk about something from the Easter story that has often struck me. In the Garden of Gethsemane, before Pilate, and even on the cross, Jesus would not defend Himself. They taunted Him – “If you are the son of God, come down from the cross that we might believe.” Now this is the point at which I would have found it to extremely difficult to stay there. This was a chance to prove His Sonship! As at other times, though, Jesus did not budge. Why?
Through the ages, God has not defended Himself. He is, and that is enough! He has created a beautiful world for us to live in, He has given us Jesus, His Word and the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us. “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” (Psalm 19:1). He tells us that He has left God-evidence right here with us.
If God exists why is there so much suffering? If He exists why didn’t he heal that sick person? These are questions borne from doubt, which I realise God does not answer. However, God did not choose suffering. He wanted a blissful life for us forever. The human race chose suffering and death when our first parents ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
God does things to show His glory. His ways are past finding out. He chose the foolish things of this world to shame the wise (1 Cor 1:27), and He does not answer to doubt. He answers to faith. Only believe, and you will see that God is all in all to you!
